Status of Frank and Lora's Visa Situation

We are making some progress on our visa and residency status (green card).  Because of the new visa laws (Oct 2007) in Russia Frank and Lora will not be able to stay in country longer than 90 days at a time and cannot re-enter the country before a

90-day waiting period.  Our only option to stay for longer uninterrupted periods is to receive  temporary residency status (green card).  We started the process back in November and in February we were allowed to make an inquiry for consideration to be included in the quota of applicants.

In March we were granted the opportunity to apply and started gathering all of the paperwork, legal documents, interpretation, medical exams etc.  The last day of April we final submitted the application.  We have been told that a decision will be forthcoming no sooner than the end of October 2008.  We must be in Russia under the normal visa laws in order to receive our green cards if they are issued.  So we will be leaving Russia May 26 and hoping to return on a new visa (yet to be issued) after the required 90 days on September 1 so that we can be in Russia for the students when they get back from summer break.

Unless we have the green card by the end of November we would have to leave Russia again for 90 days (expensive and impractical for ministry).  These are times that the doctrine of the sovereignty of God is highlighted in our walk with him.  But be it not for that we would be in a desperate state of anxiety.   Praise God.  We trust him for the best.

Financial Seminar for Families

Sveta
SAM hosted a seminar conducted by the wife of a pastor of a local Russian Church.  Katya had attended this seminar at her church and thought it would be of value to the broader Christian community.  The title of the seminar on the screen to the left is "Managing a Family Budget".  The speaker addressed the timely concerns of families that are now being challenged not only with normal financial concerns but the new traps that loom in the new economics of  "consumerism."  Easy credit and get-rich-quick investment schemes were discussed as well as the basics of budgeting.

Interestingly during the seminar it came out that many of the churches represented had no budgets or financial plans.  This area of stewardship in personal and church finances must be addressed if families are to survive the temptations, trials, and pressures that the Russian economic environment is now presenting.  And perhaps even more important is to have Christian families and Churches prepared to meet the opportunities to glorify Christ that God gives us through faithful stewardship.
It is a blessing that this seminar was used by God to light a fire under some influential members of the body of Christ.
Easter at Koinonia

Resurrection Sunday on the Eastern Orthodox calendar this year was April 27.  Koinonia started our celebration the four preceding Sundays with devotions on the resurrection during our worship services (in addition to the regular preaching).

Easter 2008 ChoirThe idea was to prepare us for a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the resurrected Christ.  In addition to the teaching one of the sisters formed a choir that blessed us each week with a new hymn that they had rehearsed the week before.  By Easter Sunday we were prepared for all of the non-believing guests that were invited.  The choir was beautiful, the preaching pointed, and God blessed us wonderfully.  Some of the visitors who came have returned.

Koinonia Travels to Russian Orphanage

There are two main objectives for the Koinonia fellowship involvement in orphan ministry.  First is to be an encouragement and resource for a Russian church that has initiated a ministry with a local orphanage.  Secondly, to teach the Koinonia church how to build a successful long-term ministry that will meet the needs of the community in cooperation with other believers to bring glory to Christ as God brings people to himself.Alpha Christmas event 2

Through a relationship with a local Russian church Koinonia was invited to one of the city-run orphanages.  Over 20 of our church family prepared a short program involving praise songs in 5 different languages (each explained in Russian to the kids).  There was a time of questions and answers and lots of interaction with the kids in a group setting.

The Russian church provided some craft material and our team spent time with each kid as they worked on their project together.  As a result we have appointed one of the students to be our coordinator for future interaction with this orphanage and Russian church.  We have patiently waited more than four months for the opportunity start this ministry and we are trusting that God will continue to bless as we follow his lead.
